Overview
Shehu Umar is a telecommunications, technology and infrastructure executive with more than 20 years of experience delivering business growth, digital transformation and large-scale connectivity projects across Africa. He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director of Transworld Investment & Securities Limited and as a Director of Trapezion Africa Limited, a technology company operating at the intersection of telecommunications, energy and critical infrastructure.
Career
Over the course of his career, Shehu has held senior leadership and technical positions with organisations including IHS Towers, Aviat Networks, Harris Stratex Networks, SpectraLink Wireless, Sipwise GmbH, Ignite Global Solar Solutions and MTN Nigeria.
At IHS Towers, he worked in Innovation and New Business Development, where he led initiatives involving Internet of Things asset-management systems, rural telephony, satellite backhaul, weather-monitoring infrastructure, electric-vehicle charging and distributed digital infrastructure. His work combined technical evaluation with commercial strategy, investment analysis, partnership development and the management of complex, multi-million-dollar project portfolios.
Earlier in his career, Shehu led telecommunications managed-services and network-modernisation projects across multiple African markets. At Aviat Networks, he helped grow the company's regional managed-services business from approximately US$3 million to US$16.5 million in annual revenue over four years. He also managed a major network-transformation programme covering approximately 200 DWDM nodes and 6,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure.
As Country Manager of SpectraLink Wireless, he led the development of enterprise broadband networks in Nigeria and Ghana, including the deployment of TV white-space technology and a network of 100 Wi-Fi hotspots in Accra. His wider experience encompasses market-entry strategy, project origination, solution sales, international operations, partnership management, regulatory engagement and profit-and-loss responsibility.
Education & Credentials
Shehu holds a Global Executive MBA from IESE Business School in Barcelona and a B.Sc. in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University. He is a Certified ScrumMaster and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
